Mark Steinmetz has released several books in the recent years that are now sold out and hard to find at the regular retail price; he is a solid value and a safe bet when it comes to looking for a beautiful book.
With his latest effort Paris in my time, the artist revisits and updates the theme of street photography in Paris, in the path of famous peers like Atget, Kertész or Doisneau.
Mark Steinmetz was born and raised in Paris, and from the images he made, he seems to know his ways around the city, and seems to even feel at home there. The phorographs - made between 1985 and 2010 - will indeed remind us of previous ones made by the older masters, but Steinmetz succeeds in restoring the tradition of French "photographie humaniste" (humanist photography) and at the same time renewing the genre with a modern feel in both the subjects (which seems obvious) and his approach.
The book is really well printed on beautiful thick stock.
