Bottrop-Ebel 76 is a re-reading of one of Michael Wolf's student project.
In this body of work, the artist documented life in a small mining town in the Ruhr District, a region he new quite well for having lived some time there.
This "early" series (he was 22 at the time) shades a different light on Michael Wolf's work, as we are mostly familiar with his focuses from the last 15 years (the city of Hong-Kong, Japan, Google Street View). This book is a sociological study of a population, of the family's daily lives, and by extension of the whole region at that time. The photographs in this study bring to mind the more famous works of English photographers that shot images during the early Thatcher years (Chris Killip, Paul Graham, Tony Ray-Jones, etc).
