The subtitle for this photobook: Unseen Photographic Archives of a Mythical Train

Presentation by Editions Textuel:

[translation L'Ascenseur Végétal]

" Created in 1883 and operated until 1977, linking Paris to Constantinople – future Istanbul –, the Orient-Express was the first of a series of luxury transnational trains of the Compagnie internationale des wagons lits. A technical achievement, its creation was a tour de force, both diplomatically and economically.

Based upon the photographic archive of the company, this book presents documents of a high value, many of them never seen before. This exceptional series of images offers new live insight into the industrial epic of the Orient-Express, that nourished for a long time the imagination of many artists and writers interested in the Orient.

If the famous novel Murder on the Orient-Express (1934) by Agatha Christie cristallized its mythology, the behind-the-scenes of the legendary train are no less fascinating: from the kitchens to the workshops, from the laundries to the majestic depots where the trains rest, waiting to go again. "

A publication under the direction of Eva Gravayat, in collaboration with Arthur Mettetal. Texts in French and English throughout.

This project was the subject of an exhibition during the Rencontres d'Arles festival in 2021.
