Presentation by Editions Textuel :          [translation by L'Ascenseur Végétal]

" A fabulous collective sum, a manifesto, a book of reference.

This book includes over 450 images and introduces to the work of over 300 female photographers from all over the world, from the invention of the medium until the dawning of the 21st century. Rare are the ones whose names made it to our time, disappearing form the story of creation to the benefit of the « great masters ».

The obliteration of women in the history of photography results from a long tradition of discredit. However, original and independent creators, they never stopped documenting, questioning and transfiguring the world, demonstrating that the camera can be a fantastic tool for emancipation. No experimentation nor any tumult from the 19th and 20th centuries escaped their attention. In order to tell the diversity of the paths these female photographers took, Luce Lebart and Marie Robert have invited 160 female authors from different parts of the globe to share their input into this manifesto book.

The research led by Marie Robert and Luce Lebart was made possible thanks to the support of the Rencontres d'Arles festival and of Women In Motion, a program by Kering that sheds light on the place of women in the world of arts and culture. "
