In Coal not Dole Michael Kerstgens documents the sad and famous miners' strike of 1984 and 1985 in South Wales and Yorkshire.

Michael Kerstgens, then still a student, is interested in the daily and family life, and the social life during this extremely tough period of time. He takes us in the miners' homes, to the union's club, to the meetings, and on the spoil heaps where whole families pick-up coal to heat their homes... The last chapter of the book (in colours) takes us back to some of the places, and introduces us back to the main character of the book, 28 years later, in 2013.

Beautiful images and an interesting documentary work on this difficult period of time.
