In 1982, he published a first photobook, Bad Weather, a subject the British love to hate! He makes photos on almost nothing, on boredom (he will later say that the notion of boredom fascinates him). Also in 1982, he returned to England and settled near Liverpool, still in the industrial North, far from the London of his childhood. It is also a major turning point, that of the transition to color photography.
Characterized by derision and irony, the work of Martin Parr belongs to the field of documentary photography, for which he proposes a new approach. His work appears as one of the privileged witnesses of British society at the time of Margaret Thatcher. Photographers like Joel Meyerovitz, William Eggleston and Stephen Shore have an important influence on him.
He has worked on many projects by producing series, for example on tourism, where he shows the contrast between expectation and reality, or a series on himself, with portraits over several years, where he presents the same attitude.
He has been a member of the Magnum Photos Photo Cooperative since 1994.
In 2004, he is curator of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles. His work is exhibited in 2009. In 2008, he receives the Centennial Medal from the Royal Photographic Society
