Karma is quite a surprise, with pictures of cars done with a strong flash light, car parts, portraits (with a flash light as well) of drivers and passengers that sometimes try to hide and sometimes act naturally when the photographer remains unnoticed.
In this book, Óscar Monzón shows us in a very direct manner the importance of the car in our lives, the sense of familiarity with have with them, and the gigantic space is has taken in our lives without us really noticing. The artist also displays the sense of isolation, of "being home", and almost of impunity we - again, almost uncounsciously - experience when we sit in our cars, eventhough we are in the public space.
The brash images, almost burned by the flash light, give a sense of this fusion with the machine, whether through strange behaviours that seem to be very natural, or in the violence of the reactions when people realize their "car privacy" is violated by a photographer.
The great book design, with bleeding images and thick-stock glossy paper, reminds you of a high-end fashion or luxury catalogue, and - strangely - reinforces the impression of being a peeping-Tom and to intrude in an intimate relationship...
