Stanley Greene started taking pictures of the punk and rock scenes in 1975, at a time when he had roommates who played in some of the bands... It was San Francisco, these musicians were often artists as well, and after some time, when they needed images of their performances to be included in magazine articles, they naturally turned to their roommate.

In this way, Stanley Greene became a professional photographer - still a student - without having asked for it or really realized it. It is only much later, as he had joined the French Agence VU' agency, that an assistant requested to see more of this work he had peeked at. Greene did not even have contact-prints!

Following this renewed interest in this work, a first book was published in 2009: Black Passport, designed by Teun van der Heijden, who also worked on The Western Front.

The texts in the book are in English; they are translated into French in a tipped-in booklet.
