Ouvrage de référence sur le photographe chilien Sergio Larrain (Magnum Photos), qui - bien que n'ayant été actif qu'entre 1949 et 1971 - restera comme l'un des grands maîtres de la photographie de rue et du noir et blanc.

L'artiste a été honoré d'une rétrospective aux Rencontres d'Arles 2013 et une exposition différente présente son travail (jusqu'au 22 décembre) à la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson à Paris.

Cet recueil imposant, élégant et très bien imprimé parcourt l'ensemble de la carrière de l'artiste dans le monde entier; les villes de Valparaiso et Londres qui ont donné lieu à deux monographies, mais aussi l'île de Chiloé, Buenos Aires, la Bolivie et le Pérou, Paris, etc.

Cet ouvrage très documenté, dirigé par Agnès Sire, qui eut une longue correspondance avec l'artiste, nous parle également de l'homme, de son attachement à l'humanité et à sa survie, de son retrait du monde dans la méditation. On retrouve dans ce livre des facs-similés de carnets de notes et de dessins de Sergio Larrain ainsi que de nombreux autres documents et éléments historiques venant illustrer sa carrière et sa vie, pour une meilleure compréhension de l'oeuvre et de l'homme.

Sergio Larrain was a Chilean photographer (1931-2012); he his most famous for his emblematic work of the cities and the streets of Valparaíso and Santiago. This work was published in two very important books: "El rectángulo en la mano" (Cadernos Brasileiros, 1963) and "Valparaíso" (Hazan, 1991 - A collaboration with poet Pablo Neruda). Editions Xavier Barral (today Atelier EXB) published a facsimile version of "El rectángulo en la mano" in 2018, and a new edition of "Londres 1959" in 2020. © Portrait by René Burri / Magnum
