Publisher's presentation:

"Spanning almost three decades, Moonshine is a portrait of the American Appalachian folk, a mythologised region populated by ‘moonshiners’. Van Manen’s images are defined by a fierce intimacy with her subject, as the viewer teeters on the edge of the frame, perpetually trespassing on private moments: rollicking children practicing handstands on the couch; a kneeling daughter combing the hair of her grandmother.

Van Manen first visited the region in 1985, to the Appalachian areas of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, returning periodically up until 2013 to visit mining families with whom she lived: the Boggs family with their ten red-haired sons; miners Mavis and Junior.

The intergenerational images subtly trace the insidious changes undergone by Appalachia – the slow and steady demise of the mining industry, and the migration of inhabitants from ramshackle wooden cabins to the city, or urban trailer parks. Van Manen intermixes black-and-white images with later colour work – another register of time passing and the inevitability of change."

Van Manen, Bertien

Bertien Van Manen is a Dutch documentary photographer. After studying literature and languages, she started working as a fashion photographer and then, inspired by Robert Frank's "The Americans", she traveled for long periods, with her camera, and developped a more documentary-oriented work and practice. In particular, she traveled in China, in the United States (Appalachia), Russia and the former USSR. Bertien van Manen has published many photobooks, somme following projects made on commission, such as "A Hundred Summers, A Hundred Winters" (De Verbeelding, 1994) and "Let's Sit Down Before We Go" (Mack, 2011) in the former USSR countries, "Moonshine" (Mack, 2014) about families in the rural mining regions of Appalachia and "Beyond Maps and Atlases" (Mack, 2016) in Ireland. She has also published more personal work, for instance "I Will be Wolf" (Mack, 2017) about one of her earlier trips, in Hungary, or even much closer to her family life: "Easter and Oak Trees" (Mack, 2013). In 2021, Mack again, publishes "Archive", an overview of her career and work, drawing also from her personal archive of unpublished work.
