Coal not Dole documents the sad and famous miners' strik of 1984 and 1985 South Wales and Yorkshire.
Michael Kerstgens, then still a student, is interested in the daily and family life, and the social life during this extremely tough period of time. He takes us in the miners' homes, to the union's club, to the meetings, and on the spoil heaps where whole families pick-up coal to heat their homes... The last chapter of the book (in colours) takes us back to some of the places, and introduces us back to the main character of the book, 28 years later, in 2013.

Beautiful images and an interesting documentary work on this difficult period of time.

  • The images in this book are quite wild !The artist takes us in the life of a group of young Russians, whose days and nights revolve around alcohol, acting nonsense and sex, adrift in some apparently derelict project buildings. They have fun and go wild at night under the influence, and the days just seem to linger in the expectation of what the next night...
