The first impression when looking at Toshio Shibata's work in Contacts is that of a very original way to look at things. The artist really observes the landscapes with a very sharp eye, and seems to be looking for calm, stability, and permanence... and lays his eyes on the man-made structures and how they integrate or oppose the surrounding nature.

He created a beautiful series where geometry is very present, where sometimes the eye is abused by the way Shibata plays with the depth of field, where the senses can be disoriented because the subject itself in the image is not identified or perceived at the first glance.

A body of work with a keen and firm sense of aesthetics; a book that works really well.

The images are introduced with a text by Marc Feustel (in English & French).

Shibata, Toshio

Toshio Shibata is a Japanese photographer who studied photography in Belgium. He is specifically interested in imposing architectural constructions and their integration in their surroundings, often natural landscape: simple and geometric shapes such as dams or bridges, of which he usually captures architectural details, in a way that infuses both life and a strange quality in these landscapes. He has published, among other photobooks, "Contacts" (Poursuite, 2013), "Japanscapes" (The Velvet Cell, 2017) and  "Painting" (Chose Commune, 2021). © Portrait taken from the website of  AZITO Online gallery of Japanese Contemporary Art (not credited)
