Sworn Virgins is a series of portraits of women from Northern Albania who vowed to remain virgins their whole life, in order to be allowed - following ancient rules of their community - to assume the role of patriarch of this community, becoming in the process "men-women".

The respect these women are shown within their communities is really clear in Pepa Hristova's portraits; they convey a sense of self-confidence and show that these women have a special strength within them. The expressions and postures of the Sworn Virgins in these images reveal how legitimate and rightful these women are, but we can also feel the weight of the responsibility on their shoulders.

A very unique subject like this one is clearly a strong card for a great work of portraiture, but Pepa Hristova really connected with the characters, and offers us images that are quite simple, but pefectly convey the strength, the authority that emanates from this women, as well as the burden that their charge represents.
