Guy Tillim was born in 1962 in Johannesburg and is a major figure of the contemporary South-African photography scene.

Guy Tillim realized in the 1980's that photography could be a way to fight the deep racial divide Apartheid had created in his country: « The camera was an ideal tool to transcend these frontiers, to see what happened in my own country ».

Over the years, Guy Tillim photographed documentary projects of visual and historical strength to create testimonies to the social conflicts and inequalities prevailing in his country. In his pictures, blunt and dark colours appear suddenly from a damp grey background, in an imitative harmony with the harshness of its subjects.

Guy Tillim has published many photobooks, and among them : Departure (Michael Stevenson, 2003), Jo'burg (STE Publishers / Filigranes, 2005), Petros Village (Punctum, 2006), O Futuro Certo (Steidl, 2015), Edit Beijing (Editions Bessard, 2017), Museum of the Revolution (Mack / Fondation HCB, 2019).
